Residents north of Bayfield invited to name their local creeks. Bayfield North Watersheds Plan creek rediscovery program holds creek naming contest

William Shakespeare’s Juliet said: “What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” Is there something in a name? The Bayfield North Watersheds Management Plan committee thinks so! They’re inviting residents north of Bayfield to ‘Name Your Creek.’

What do you call a creek with no name?

The Bayfield North Watersheds is a 40-square-kilometre area, just north of Bayfield, which is home to 20 small creeks that flow directly into Lake Huron. These creeks have been given such bland scientific names as ‘Creek GO39,’ as part of the Bayfield North Watersheds Management Plan, but these alphanumeric names may not mean much to local people.

“The Bayfield North Watersheds Advisory Committee believes people in the community can give these creeks names that have more meaning to them,” said Hope Brock, Healthy Watersheds Technician with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA).  “We’re hoping that people north of Bayfield will enjoy the chance to name their creeks, become more aware of them and feel even more connected to them than they do already.”

A form for the creek rediscovery program contest is available online at abca.on.ca. Submissions must be received no later than February 5, 2010. If you would like to help your community rediscover a local creek, please submit the details to Hope Brock at the ABCA by phone at 519-235-2610 or toll-free 1-888-286-2610, by e-mail to hbrock@abca.on.ca, or by mail to ABCA, 71108 Morrison Line, RR 3, Exeter, N0M 1S5. The form may also be faxed to 519-235-1963.

The Bayfield North Watersheds Management Plan draft document is available at the Bayfield and Clinton public libraries, or at the ABCA administration centre near Exeter, or online, to see which creeks need a name. The Bayfield North Watersheds Advisory Committee will select a name after considering all submissions.

There will be prizes for creativity, Brock said, “… so submit your name today.”

A watershed management plan is created co-operatively by the community and government agencies to manage the water, land and water interactions, and aquatic resources within a particular watershed to protect and enhance the health of the ecosystem as land uses change.

The process of developing a community-based watershed plan has created an opportunity to ensure that as many local interests as possible are addressed, according to Brock.

“Members of the community have volunteered their time to develop this plan and they are improving the natural environment through their efforts,” she said.

The watershed management plan document will provide information about the natural environment and community interests and issues to landowners north of Bayfield and to other local decision makers, as well as local and government agencies. The land management, aquatics, and erosion sections of the plan provide background information, community interests and issues, a management goal and recommended actions.

Bayfield North Residents interested in ‘naming their creek’ are invited to provide the following information:

Current creek name (e.g., GO31) or creek location (see map at abca.on.ca)
Proposed creek name
Individual’s name, phone number and e-mail (optional)
