THREE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS FOR FEVER-WRACKED TERREBLANCHE 21 June 2009 Shannon Terreblanche's head was spinning as he turned into the paddock at Teutschenthal, scene of the 2009 German Motocross Grand Prix. Some might have thought that it had something to do with the memories of last year's traumatic events racing around under his blond locks. On that occasion, you will recall, the South African left the track in a helicopter, with his femur sporting a new joint where one was not designed. But no, the buzzing this time had to do with a fever that was building up inside of him, and the South African was distinctly the worse for wear as he went on his Saturday morning track walk. Despite felling like death warmed up, Shanter produced a workmanlike performance during Saturday's qualifying race, and qualified in 20th position, ahead of some big names in the GP field. After a fairly restless night, he rolled out for action under the German sun. The first race started off well enough, and for a number of laps he circulated well in the points on his Sturm Racing Kawasaki. As the race progressed, however, his fever raised high enough to melt gold, and when he found himself unable to concentrate anymore, he retired from the race. After a bit of nursing, Shannon decided to chance his arm again in the second race. He started out of the points, but he was grimly determined to add to his world championship score, and this time he stuck it out. His perseverance under trying conditions were rewarded with three world championship points as he managed to battle his way forward to 18th position. Despite a number of setbacks during the year, Shannon's season is now starting to take shape, and he is currently 25th in the world standings.
