Pierre-Alexandre Renet came into the penultimate round of the 2009 MX3 motocross world championships at Randers, Denmark, with a handy 29 point lead. Mathematically, it was possible, but not probable, that he could go away with the world title in hand. The consistency of main title rival Alex Salvini throughout the season made this a possibility that the Bodo Schmidt Racing team did not even seriously consider, though.
As it turned out, however, the pendulum swung Pela's way on the weekend. He won the GP, whilst Salvini had problems in he second heat after a crash. Thus the popular Frenchman was crowned world champion with one round left to go in the series.
