Karro second at Red Bull Pro Nationals event

KARRO SECOND AT RED BULL PRO NATIONALS EVENT

19 July 2009

If a mother bee were to teach her offspring the diligence so intrinsic to the species, she might do worse than to send them buzzing off to witness Matiss Karro for a week or two. By way of illustration, let us recap the Riga Raider's dizzying schedule during the last few weeks: SInce 28 June he has raced in Latvia, raced in Estonia, raced in Sweden, stopped over in Belgium for some training, hopped across to the UK for a British championship event, returned to Belgium for more training, endured his manager's cooking, feigned appreciation for said life-threatening activities, and finally (deep breath) - returned to England for the third round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals series.

Matiss was second in the inaugural round of the series, and missed the second round as a result of his thumb injury. He was ready for business as usual though as the series touched down at Canada Heights, not too far from the MVR-D Suzuki team's London base. Fit and raring to go, the teenager posted the fifth fastest time in the training session, and shook himself ready for the day's activities.

Curly scrabbled off the line in fifth position in race 1, and in the mixed 250cc and 450cc class was having to fight tooth and nail for every position won. He overcame the resistance offered by a couple of riders on more powerful open class machines, and finally pulled himself up to third position as the flag man enthusiastically waved the chequered flag about.

A similar start in race two allowed the Latvian to demonstrate his consistency , for again he took on all comers to finish third in the race. His two race podiums hoisted him onto the overall podium with second for the day. The Red Bull events traditionally end off with a crowd favourite, namely a one lap winner-takes-all dash. Matiss used his his good starting skills to optimum effect in this dash, and finished fourth overall, the first MX2 mounted rider home.

The popular teenager had the crowd in stitches with his podium interview, delivered in his characteristic deadpan style: "The crowd was great. I got second today, so perhaps if they cheer a little more I can get the win"

Matiss is in full preparation mode for the next GP in the world championship series at Lommel, Belgium on 2 August.
