Greetings to all in the Kingdom of Huronia!

Okay, maybe it’s Huron… and not a ‘Kingdom’ per se, but those of us fortunate enough to work at the Huron Business Development Corporation do have TWO monarchs that we can call our own: Queen Elizabeth II of the House of Windsor (www.royal.gov.uk/) AND Queen Pamela of…er, the Stanleys’ House?

Perhaps it’s the rapidly approaching May 2-4 weekend that has me thinking about royalty—it IS a celebration of Queen Victoria’s birthday after all and not simply a bonanza for The BEER Store! But I digress, so without further ado, on with the show! “Overture, curtains, lights; this is it, the night of nights. No more rehearsing and nursing a part, we know every part by heart!”

I read something curious today. Actually, two things—Yes! That means I’ve read my quota for the year!

Yikes! I forgot to mention why you’re reading this in the first place…but I bet you’ve already figured it out. Welcome to another edition of the fastest-growing newsletter subscription in all of Huronia. Oops! I meant HURON: Small Business Success!

Okay, I have no data to back that statement up but how could it not be true? J

So, back to my readings. One of the newsletters to which I subscribe (www.emarketer.com) reported today that music sales in North America fell 18.6% in 2008. Typically, most would respond and say that it’s because of all the free downloading (ie. music piracy) going on. At the same time, eMarketer reported that sales of music through legal downloads (eg. Napster, itunes, etc.) increased by 16.5%. The article went on though to inform that fewer people are buying music—both digitally online and in conventional CD format.

Okay, that brings us to the second item I read. I also subscribe to a service called, ‘Urban Word of the Day’ which in fact, should probably be re-monikered as simply, ‘Modern Slang’. In any case, the word of the day was, ‘Autotune’ and is defined as “Pitch software specifically for vocals that makes up for a lack of natural singing talent. 90% or more of all ‘professional’ recordings use this software.”

Hmmmm… Anyone see a connection here? Better question! Anyone NOT see a connection here? The free downloading of music (ie. piracy) becomes a major problem as quality, authenticity, originality and the artistic merit of modern music evaporates. In other words, the issue isn’t illegal downloads—it’s that ‘artists’ are making CRAP! And who in their right mind pays top-dollar (or even bottom-dollar) for ‘CRAP’?

Now, we can laugh because we love to hate the big corporations that make millions of dollars from us each year in such areas as: music, banking, oil and communications. It looks good on them, right? But, and this is the really, really tough part, ask yourself why your own sales have dropped! The recession can’t be blamed for everything since the vast majority of people remain gainfully employed.

Enjoy our newsletter and don’t just file it away under useful tidbits—take the time to implement its ideas. You have only success to gain!

“Th-th-th-that’s ALL folks!!”

HALIBURTON TRAIL RIDERS

Access to the Haliburton County Rail for licensed and insured off road motorcycles was granted April 22 by the Haliburton County Council. This was a three year process involving a new club incorporation and the availability of trails liability insurance.

OFTR members will be able to use the rail trail under a stewardship agreement to be signed with the county in the next few weeks, until November 30, 2009.

The agreement will have a provision for excessive noise and a limit of 94 dB (SAE J1287) and we are training the local enforcement organizations.

TRAILS LINKAGE

IS STILL A PRIORITY ISSUE

The OFTR has been working with Industry, Enforcement and the Ministry of Transportation to develop a set of qualifications that would allow an off-road motorcycle, under certain conditions, to travel from one trail to another using publics roads.

ONTARIO TRAIL RIDE SERIES

The beage was awesome and the new OFR trailer looked great!

On live registrations are now available for the next few rides. Pre-entry helps the organizers plan better so be sure to sign up early!

Ontario Camp of the Deaf

Needs Your Letters

We received a letter from Derek Rumble this week. It seems they want to shut down racing at the camp.

While the OFTR is not a race organization, we know a lot of our members have attended motocamp and also compete from time to time. The OFTR will assist in this issue as much as we can without using membership dollars or hinder our current land use efforts.

CMRC ANQ @ GoPHER DUNES

Update Blast from the Dunes....April 28, 2009

What a mixed bag of weather we've had these past few days with gale force winds on Saturday turning the Dunes into Desert Storm at the worst of times, but this still didn't seem to stop some 100 riders from coming out to test & tune their riding skills.

By Sunday the scenery changed drastically, as a multitude of odd & unusual 4x4 trucks and home-built contraptions rolled-in to attend our 15th. Annual Spring 4x4 MudFest.  This popular event attracted 500 trucks and thousands of sun-burned & thirsty spectators!   Following registration and the drivers' meeting, each competitor had turns to manoeuvre their way through one of the specially dug-out mudbogs and loop through the marked trail route testing their own personal skills and the toughness of their vehicle.  At the start of the run they were first welcomed by quite docile mud-pits, which became rather deceitfully treacherous as the day progressed....but from the enthusiasm of the crowd, it sure reflected a fun day for all!  Many have already marked their calendars for the first-ever Summer 4x4 MudFest taking place on Sunday, June 28

Now moving along....
We want to remind our Repetitive Practice Riders that there are only 2 days left to purchase your 2009 Gopher Dunes Membership by April 30.  It offers you unlimited practice riding, free gate admissions, Pro Shop discounts and for 1st. prize a chance to WIN BACK your full $450 cost of the membership fee.
2nd. prize consists of a Pro Shop Prize Pak incl. an OGIO goggle box, 2 pair of SPY goggles, tear-offs & a spare lens;  3rd. prize offers the winner a pair of tickets to Round 5 of the Monster Energy CMRC Pro National Motocross Races at the Dunes on July 19.
Our draw is being held on May 1st. and any of our '09 Members will have a chance to win!   Last chance....buy now....call Barb:  519-842-2781

A reminder to our 65cc pee-wee riders....we have a full-day training session coming up for you on Saturday, June 6.  Don't miss out on this chance to brush up on your riding & racing skills....a full day of instructional and hands-on training for only $150.  Don't miss out....sign up now!
Training School Registration Forms can be accessed and downloaded from: www.gopherdunes.com
