KTM Canada Weekly Ice Race Report February 23rd, 2010 - Numb Bum and Valcourt Grand Prix, results

Gas prices could hit $1.12 a litre by summer Even though supply ample and demand 'abysmal,' experts say hikes are inevitable

Feb 23, 2010

John Spears Business Reporter Toronto Star

History says gasoline prices will rise in the coming months. But fundamental market forces say they shouldn't, according to energy experts.

Energy adviser Roger McKnight of Oshawa-based En-Pro International Inc. says he expects gasoline prices to peak near $1.08 to $1.12 a litre before the May 24 weekend.

Prices are currently just below $1 a litre at many gas stations in Greater Toronto.

But McKnight's not entirely happy with his own prediction: "There's no logic to it," he admits.

Fred Rozell, retail pricing director of Oil Price Information Service, agreed that traditional market forces don't point to a price increase.

"If you look at demand, it's just abysmal," he told Associated Press in New York.

Yet he, too, predicts prices are heading higher.

Rozell said that rising demand for oil in China is pushing up the price of crude oil, the raw material for gasoline.

McKnight said that gasoline prices have risen from February through April for 24 of the past 26 years, but this year ought to be an exception.

Supply in North America is ample, with inventories above the five-year average, he said. Refineries are running below 80 per cent capacity, so they could produce more if demand rises. But that's not happening, either.

"Right now, if you look at the demand numbers in the U.S. ... they're all down," McKnight said.

Two factors are disrupting the equation, he said. Strikes at French oil refineries have been going on for six weeks.

Usually, European refiners export gasoline to the U.S. northeast during the winter. But the strike has restricted the flow, leading to some nervousness, and resulting in higher prices on futures markets. That impacts Canadian prices.

The U.S. dollar is also strong, and since oil is priced in U.S. dollars, that firms up the price for Canadians paying with Canadian dollars.

Canadians do have some protection against the currency factor, McKnight said. Because Canada is a big oil producer, higher oil prices boost the Canadian dollar, even if the U.S. dollar is also strong.

"The Canadian dollar is buffering a lot of the pain right now," he said.

In the U.S., Rozell said the modest demand for fuel will keep gasoline prices far short of the record level of $4 (U.S) a gallon, set in 2008. He's predicting a peak of no more than $3.25 a gallon. The U.S. national average is now $2.648 a gallon.

On futures markets, crude oil is above $80 a barrel. Oil for March delivery was up 35 cents to $80.16 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Monday, while the April contract was up 25 cents to $80.31 a barrel.

The Taste of Huron culinary festival was awarded the top honour in the "Best New Event of 2009" category at the Ontario Economic Development Awards.

Huron Awarded AGAIN for Provincial Economic Development

The Taste of Huron culinary festival was awarded the top honour in the "Best New Event of 2009" category at the Ontario Economic Development Awards. The Taste of Huron event took place across Huron County, from August 24-30, 2009, and was jointly produced by the County of Huron, Heritage Culture Partnership and the Huron Tourism Association. The Ontario Economic Development Awards took place Thursday, February 4 at the Toronto Marriott Eaton Centre Hotel. "Huron is one of Ontarioís top agricultural producers" stated Rick Sickinger, Taste of Huron event co-ordinator.  "We wanted to create an event  to highlight the great food and experiences that Huron has to offer both locals and tourists alike."

"This year, over 130 entries were judged," stated 2009 EDCO President Lauren Millier. "The competition allows local communities to see just how they stack up against other municipalities when it comes to promoting location, investment & tourism opportunities." Many food-related festivals and events take place around the province and competition is very high when is come to the best one.ìIt is always an honour to accept these awards as the competition is very stiff," stated Jenna Ujiye, Tourism Marketer for the County of Huron "This competition result demonstrates our effectiveness in our economic development efforts." Expert judges reviewed all of the entries that covered everything from promotional brochures to infrastructure development projects.  There are judges from specialized areas of expertise assigned to judge specific categories. The Taste of Huron event has also been nominated for the Premiers Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence which has a grand prize of $50 000.00 and 55 regional prizes of $5000.00, these awards will be announced in the next few months.

Taste of Huron took place at different locations around Huron and allowed for people from every corner to take part in the event. The 2009 event highlighted local chefs, producers and food, along with dinners, workshops and festivities. "We set this event up so that it could continue on each year"said Brittany Fry, Taste of Huron assistant co-ordinator. "Agricultural events show one of the major cultures of our community." The 2010 Taste of Huron Culinary Festival is set for August 20 - 29. Details of the 2010 Taste of Huron event will be coming soon. Information, videos and photos about last yearís events can be found at www.tasteofhuron.ca

This is second time for a Huron event to win the prestigious award. In 2008 Huron won the same award for the Doors Open Haunted Huron event, which is slated to take place October 22-24, 2010.
