Hamstrung Karro forced out of Portuguese Grand Prix

HAMSTRUNG KARRO FORCED OUT OF PORTUGUESE GRAND PRIX

The line between triumph and tragedy is oftentimes agonizingly thin. Professional sports people, perhaps more so that most other people, are painfully aware of this. A sweeping triumph today can very easily turn into a crushing disappointment tomorrow. For Matiss Karro, already no stranger to disappointment, last weekend delivered another slap in the face with a wet cloth as he failed to ride a single meter on race day due to an injury during qualifying.

Coming off a high after his maiden British Championship victory, the Latvian teenager was keen as mustard as he arrived at Agueda. He slotted into his day's work, but what should have been a mere formality of getting through his qualifying day turned into something much more serious. During the course of the pre-qualifying session, Matiss snagged his foot and painfully wrenched his ankle. The team immediately treated the affected limb, and later in the afternoon, the plucky youngster gritted his teeth through the pain to participate in the qualifying race. Despite the searing pain, he did as best he could, and although he was obviously not in optimum form, he finished 21st out of the 40 starters.

By Sunday morning, it looked as if two tennis balls had been shoved into the MVR-D Suzuki rider's ankle. He had a go during the early morning warm-up, but the pain was nigh on unbearable, and there was no option but to withdraw from the race. The keen racer was naturally bitterly disappointed, and will undergo tests this week at the team's home base in England to determine the extent of the damage. If he gets the all clear, he will participate in the Spanish GP at Bellpuig next weekend.

For those Karro fans who are disappointed that they could not cheer for their rider this weekend, there is a consolation of sorts. The fine folks at Moto Magazine produced another professional video of the British championship event at Brampton last weekend, an event where Matiss was near untouchable.
