 MORE GP POINTS FOR TERREBLANCHE

 10 May 2009

You have to hand it to Shannon Terreblanche - no matter what life
throws at him in the way of setbacks, he soaks it up and keeps
plugging away. Fortunately for the young South African, he had a
decent outing in the last international Belgian race to hoist his
spirits in a year during which he and the proverbial Murphy became
very closely linked. Be that as it may, each race is a new event, and
for his latest adventure, Shannon took the long trek down to Portugal
for Round 5 of the 2009 motocross world championships at Agueda,
Portugal.

The blond charger was motivated to add to his meagre GP points
tally, and the first order of the day was to get a decent qualifying
result. After posting the 20th fastest time in the pre-qualifying
practice, Shannon launched into a decent rhythm as soon as the
qualifying race got going. He demonstrated his increasing familiarity
with the class, and finally rode to an encouraging 18th position in
the qualifying race.

Shanter used his decent start gate to good effect and slipped into
10th position at the start of race 1. As the race progressed, and with
some heavyweights breathing down his neck, the customary arm pump got
the upper hand, and he dropped down a few spots. Nevertheless, the
teenager kept the plot upright and focused on finishing the race,
finally claiming 16th spot for his second points haul of the season.

Race 2 had an even more promising start for the MX1 class newcomer.
This time he charged into 5th spot off the start. A few mistakes cost
him a number of spots, but he was holding steady for a good points
harvest when he suddenly disappeared off the radar. The reason soon
became clear. The Sturm Kawasaki inadvertently slotted into neutral
just as he went down a fearsome drop-off, and Shannon tumbled to the
ground with all the finesse of a boat anchor. Despite the heavy crash,
he was not badly hurt, but the race was effectively run.

Shannon had mixed feelings about the race. Naturally, he was happy
to break the points drought and get some more figures behind his name,
but on the other hand, the second race delivered more misfortune.
Despite the points haul, he dropped down in the world rankings,
currently sitting in 29th spot. ON the positive side, he is forever
edging closer to the thick of the class in the speed stakes, and it is
only a matter of time before the really good results fall to hand. His
next opportunity to do so will be at the upcoming Spanish GP at
Bellpuig.
