Karro fourth at Lyng

KARRO FOURTH AT LYNG

12 July 2009

Straight off the back of his career-best GP finish at the Grand Prix of Sweden, Matiss Karro hopped across to Belgium for a day or two's worth of training, skipped the Channel back to England and jumped into action again at the fifth round of the British Motocross championships at Lyng. The Latvian youngster suffered, as our faithful reader will recall, a setback in the championship series when he was forced to defend his second position with a still-injured thumb, and consequently he came into this event lying third in the standings.

Cheery as ever, Matiss took the MVR-D Suzuki out for qualifying in the short qualifying session. He was not able to find a good rhythm between himself, bike and track during the short session, and qualified in eighth spot. He produced somewhat less than his usual bullet start in the first race, but not by much, and he slotted into sixth position. He soon passed eternal rival Neville Bradshaw, and kept the pressure on the riders preceding him. With a few laps to go, he passed young Mel Pocock, who has displayed a wonderful surge of speed in the last few weeks, to finish third in the race.

THe curly-headed speedster charged into the first corner in seventh position in the second race. He gave, as always, his all, but still his relative lack of race fitness after his injury hampered him, and the best he could do on this occasion was to recover to fifth position. He did enough on the day to finish fourth overall, on equal points with third-placed Martin Barr, but missing the podium position by dint of Barr's better result in the second race. Although Matiss had closed the points gap to Neville Bradshaw in second position, Jake Nicholls enjoyed a sterling day, and enjoys a 2 point advantage over him in third position.

Although it was an adequate result, Matiss himself was not at all happy wiht the day's outing. "I did not feel comfortable on the track at all," he remarked. "It was my first time there, and I never really got a good rhythm. The track was very one-lined and it was difficult to pass. I lost some points in the championship against (Stephen) Sword and Nicholls, but I'll be back strong at the next round."
