The Walton track, home of Canada's largest outdoor motocross event, was named "track of the year" by 2,000 members of the Canadian Motosport Racing Club, during an awards banquet in London, Nov. 28.

Owner Chris Lee took home a trophy from the event and later said that although the track was given the same award four years ago, it was still encouraging to be recognized.

"There were about half a dozen of the best tracks across the province nominated," Lee says. "Other tracks put a lot of effort in."

But Lee says when judging which track was best, it came down to which one "was the most fun."

"They were looking for a track that was challenging and had more than adequate features," he says. "Over the past few years, we've invested in both our facilities and the track, buying more equipment, using more dirt, upgrading features and we've raised the level of painting and fencing."

When the Walton track opened in 1970, it was little more than a cow pasture, Lee says.

Since then, yearly modifications and additions have grown it to become what it is today – the home of a sporting event that attracts 1,000 riders and 25,000 spectators every summer for the Walton Transcan Grand National Championship.

Lee says popularity in the sport and attendance is also growing every year, as the track hosts more events, including those for ATV riders.

"Last year we had the best Transcan event ever," he says.

Over the winter, the track is dormant. In May, Lee says he'll start picking rocks and pumping water from the track to get it ready for a summer of motocross racing.
